Some may know that I am a huge Bill Hicks fan. His comedy, his observations were as current and during Bush Jr’s tenure as POTUS as they were when his father was in the whitehouse.
Having read all the books, brought all the albums, I never saw the set he did for Letterman. It was the stuff of legend, made all the more poignant because within a year he was dead. Just as he started to really roll. Needless to say, it gets a lot of coverage in the plethora of Hicks related books… as well as here
David Letterman I guess has always regretted that choice, and last nights interview with Bills Mother and then showing the complete set was great. Sure, we had all heard the material elsewhere, delivered in differing styles (and no, Im not talking about Dennis Leary). But it was just nice for the completest to be able to see the show last night and enjoy.
Was the letterman apology genuine. I beleive so. It doesnt smack of anything other than a man truly embarrassed by the choice he made. It was his show and he pulled the slot for transmission.Of course, thats all by the bye as Bill hHicks. I guess (maybe) its a sign that America and its media are undergoing huge shifts at the moment. The chat show arena back then was a different beast. This is before shows like Conan, the Daily show etc etc etc and I guess the networks were not ready for commentary on Dancing Men and Pro Life. Things have changed now, and its a shame we dont have the man here now as I would to see his take the world as it is today.
Anyway, Im sure youtube will remove to link due to some copyright claim from the network, but until then, feel free to tap into some Hicks, and if you never heard of him before you owe it to your self to go find some more.
